The award ceremony took place during<br \/>\nthe SDGs Festival at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta, in October 2024, where the<br \/>\nspotlight was on innovative solutions addressing social and environmental<br \/>\nchallenges across various sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/transform-unilever-fcdouk-ey_indonesia-wetransformlives-healthcare-activity-7250152894249754625-TE0I?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\">TRANSFORM:<br \/>\nBESTARI Challenge<\/a>, an initiative spearheaded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ukinindonesia\/p\/DBGVh6ZThhz\/?img_index=5\">TRANSFORM<\/a>, an impact<br \/>\naccelerator led by Unilever, the UK\u2019s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development<br \/>\nOffice (FCDO), and Ernst &amp; Young<i> (<\/i>EY), provides grants of up to<br \/>\n\u00a3300,000 to impact enterprises jointly selected by the panel. It supports<br \/>\ninnovative projects that drive sustainable development in alignment with the<br \/>\nSustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fostering creative solutions to pressing<br \/>\nsocietal issues while promoting collaboration among businesses, local<br \/>\ncommunities, and government entities.<\/p>\n<p>One of the winners, Kudeungoe Sugata, is an Aceh-based company established<br \/>\nin 2018. The company delivers bean-to-bar cocoa and single-origin coffee<br \/>\nsourced from Indonesian smallholder producers. Using state-of-the-art<br \/>\npost-harvest processing techniques, they produce high-quality products for<br \/>\nartisanal chocolatiers and multinational chocolate companies in Indonesia and<br \/>\nglobal markets. They aim to make business a powerful force for good, ensuring<br \/>\nit is sustainably supplied and ethically traded.<\/p>\n<p>Following its registration as PT Kudeungoe Sugata Indonesia in June<br \/>\n2022, the company has fortified its position within the agricultural landscape.<br \/>\nUnder the leadership of <b>Gde Sukardi, Head of Single Origin Sourcing at Sugata,<\/b><br \/>\nSugata has transformed into a trusted supplier that emphasizes traceability,<br \/>\nsustainability, and ethical trade. The project will directly benefit<br \/>\napproximately 500 farming households, with an additional 1,000 family members<br \/>\nindirectly benefiting from increased economic activity. \u00a0Notably, the<br \/>\ninitiative boasts a 50% female participation rate, reflecting its commitment to<br \/>\nadvancing gender equality and social inclusion, particularly in developing<br \/>\ncountries. This is especially significant given that women make up an average<br \/>\nof 43% of the agricultural labor force, according to the Food and Agriculture<br \/>\nOrganization of the United Nations (<a href=\"https:\/\/lac.unwomen.org\/en\/stories\/noticia\/2023\/10\/fao-onu-mujeres-y-unfpa-acuerdan-un-plan-para-avanzar-los-derechos-de-las-mujeres-rurales-en-america-latina-y-el-caribe\">UN Women, 2023<\/a>). By building on<br \/>\nthis foundation, the initiative aims to further boost women&#8217;s participation in<br \/>\nagriculture, empowering them as key contributors to sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>The funding will support key initiatives within a comprehensive 18-month action plan aimed at promoting the use of regenerative production systems and developing agroforestry demo plots, as well as ensuring more inclusive involvement of women and youth in fermented cocoa production. These initiatives<br \/>\ninclude coaching producers on regenerative agriculture and agroforestry,<br \/>\nincluding the development of agroforestry demo plots to support their<br \/>\ntransition to low carbon practices, as well as the establishment of greenhouse<br \/>\ngas (GHG) monitoring systems, enabling producers to participate in carbon<br \/>\nmarkets in the future and generate new income streams while addressing climate<br \/>\nchange. <\/p>\n<p>The project will also explore the feasibility of nutrient recycling<br \/>\nfrom cocoa waste, the potential for on-farm use, and an additional<br \/>\nincome source through local markets. These activities aim to promote<br \/>\nsustainable agricultural practices while encouraging environmental stewardship<br \/>\nand providing additional income for farmers. In addition to this, Sugata\u2019s<br \/>\nProducer Engagement Officers will deliver training at the farm household level,<br \/>\nusing the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) to promote the inclusion of women<br \/>\nand youth in production and marketing activities, creating a shared and<br \/>\nequitable household vision for the future of the farm.<\/p>\n<p>Sugata&#8217;s innovative initiatives have already demonstrated promise in<br \/>\ngenerating positive impacts on local communities. By focusing on capacity<br \/>\nbuilding and establishing long-term relationships with producers, the company<br \/>\nensures fair and transparent prices are paid directly to them.
