BARI, Italy, 13 June 2024 \u2014 In a powerful call to action
\non the eve of the G7 summit, Members of Parliaments from around the world
\ngathered here yesterday to call on the world\u2019s richest economies to phase out
\nfossil fuels and fast-track renewable energy.<\/p>\n

Over 50 parliamentarians have signed on to a statement
\ndemanding a full, fast, fair, and funded transition away from coal, oil, and
\ngas, and holding the G7 accountable. This statement comes on the heels of the
\nfourth hearing of the Global Parliamentarians’ Inquiry into the Progress of
\nFossil Fuels Phase Out, highlighting the urgency for action.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe final session of the Global Parliamentarians\u2019
\nInquiry into a Fossil Fuel Phase Out demonstrates a shared commitment to the
\nurgent task of tackling the climate crisis with the scale, solidarity, and
\nurgency it demands,\u201d said US Senator Ed Markey. \u201cOn the eve of the G7, this
\ncommitment is more critical than ever. The G7 countries account for more than a
\nquarter of current global oil, gas, and coal production but have the capacity
\nand responsibility to phase out fossil fuels. As parliamentarians, we will continue
\nto push for a cleaner, healthier, and more just future.\u201d<\/p>\n

G7 Funding Fossil Fuels Over Clean Energy<\/b><\/p>\n

The largest economies continue to bankroll the climate
\nemergency and shirk from their duty to fast-track clean energy. G7 countries
\nprioritize fossil fuels over clean energy, with a staggering $25.7 billion
\npumped into fossil fuel projects annually, compared to a mere $10.3 billion in
\nclean energy. Additionally, G7 countries provided a shocking $200 billion in
\nfossil fuel subsidies in 2022, while major G7-based banks financed a staggering
\n$700 billion in fossil fuel projects last year alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe G7’s continued financing of fossil fuels is a
\nblatant contradiction of their climate commitments and the Paris Agreement,\u201d
\nsaid Canada Senator Rosa Galvez. \u201cThey have the power and responsibility to
\nlead the global phaseout, and have prioritized energy transition in their
\nLeader\u2019s Summit, yet they’re backtracking on their own promises.\u201d<\/p>\n

Developing Nations Demand Action<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe historic decision at the COP28 climate conference in
\nDubai to \u2018transition away from fossil fuels\u2019 has seemed to become little more
\nthan a faint memory. The world must seize the moment to phase out fossil fuels
\nfor good, and G7 countries can and must lead by example,\u201d said Tanzania MP
\nNusrat Hanje.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have made some progress but we have work to do at
\nCOP29 in Baku & COP30 in Belem. We need to hold the G7 to account. We need
\nto move from billions to trillions in climate finance, including the energy
\ntransition,\u201d said Bangladesh MP and Minister of Environment, Forests and
\nClimate Change Saber Chowdhury.<\/p>\n

\u201cVulnerable countries and communities cannot afford to
\nwait for 2050 for the G7 to commit to a fossil fuel phaseout and a rapid
\ntransition to renewable energy systems. These countries must also uphold a just
\ntransition, scale up their delivery of climate finance, and strengthen their
\nNationally Determined Contributions,\u201d said Zambia MP Anthony Kasandwe.<\/p>\n

A Call to Seize the Moment<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe recent G7 communiqu\u00e9s are widely perceived as
\ninadequate, replete with loopholes and their countries have continued to renege
\non their commitments. We cannot afford to be unambitious. We have to act now,\u201d
\nsaid Philippines MP Raoul Manuel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe G7 plays a very big role to fund climate action
\nincluding renewables. But how much of this money is reaching the hotspots? Can
\nwe listen to each other to find a way forward for humanity?\u201d asked Uganda MP
\nLawrence Biyika Songa.<\/p>\n

\u201cG7 countries just don\u2019t want to walk the talk. We need
\nto engage finance ministries and be involved in budget discussions. We need to
\nwork with civil society more,\u201d said Sierra Leone MP Rebecca Yei Kamara.<\/p>\n

Launching the Amazon Inquiry<\/b><\/p>\n

The hearing was held back to back with a preview of the
\nGlobal Parliamentarians\u2019 Inquiry for a Fossil-Free Amazon, which aims to
\npressure governments, public institutions and corporations within and working
\nin the region to scale up pledges and actions to stop oil and gas expansion in
\nthe world\u2019s largest rainforest.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is urgent that we protect the Amazon from industrial
\nactivity and global warming. We must therefore phase out fossil fuels in the
\nregion and globally. Oil and gas production in the region has caused not only
\nenvironmental degradation but also social destabilization, health impacts,
\nhuman rights violations, and corruption. We need to find out who funds and who
\nbenefits from the exploration, and we need to make them accountable,\u201d said
\nBrazil MP Livia Duartee, who hails from Belem.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough the new Amazon inquiry, we aim to investigate
\nprogress in the fossil fuel phaseout in the Amazon region and explore
\nopportunities for phasing in renewable energy in a just and equitable manner,\u201d
\nsaid Bolivia Senator Cecilia Requena.<\/p>\n

A recent study shows that from 2016 to 2023, 38 of the
\nworld’s 60 largest banks have financed oil and gas exploitation in the Amazon
\nto the tune of $11.15 billion. Twenty-four of the 38 banks are from the G7 and
\nhave bankrolled 80% of the total.<\/p>\n

Brazil MP Livia Duarte, Bolivia Senator Cecilia Requena,
\nand Canada Senator Rosa Galvez led the media launch in Bari. They are joined in
\nthe Amazon inquiry committee by Brazil MPs C\u00e9lia Xakriab\u00e1 and Ivan Valente,
\nColombia MPs Andres Cancimance and Juan Carlos Lozada, Ecuador MP Jahiren
\nNoriega, and Peru MPs Sigrid Bazan and Ruth Luque.<\/p>\n

The inquiry will be formally launched in August, the
\nfirst-year anniversary of Ecuador’s popular consultation vote to stop and ban
\noil exploitation in Yasun\u00ed National Park in the Amazon. Hearings and other
\nrelated activities will be held from 2024 to 2025, with the outcomes scheduled
\nto be presented prior and during COP30 in Belem.<\/p>\n
